Samsung Starts Mass Production Of 5th-Gen-V-NAND Flash Memory With High Performance

Samsung Starts Mass Production Of 5th-Gen-V-NAND Flash Memory With High Performance

Samsung has been a leading memory manufacturer for years and today the company announced that it’s starting production of its next-generation V-NAND memory chips. This is the fifth iteration of the technology and the key feature here is the adoption of “Toggle DDR 4.0” NAND interface.

Samsung Starts Mass Production Of 5th-Gen-V-NAND Flash Memory With High Performance

The latter allows for 40% faster transfer speeds between storage and RAM compared to its predecessor reaching a peak of 1.4Gbps. But along with the better performance, the new memory delivers better power efficiency as well – 1.8 volts down to 1.2 volts.

The 5th-gen V-NAND chips are built similarly to the previous ones and instead of incorporating 64 layers, it comes with 90 layers of 3D charge trap flash (CTF) cells. They are stacked in a pyramid-like structure with microscopic holes in the middle. These holes serve as channels and are just few hundred nanometers wide containing over 85 billion CTF cells each storing up to three bits of data.

This has lead to a significant improvement in write speed – around 30% faster than the predecessor. The response time to read signals is also down to 50μs. The new high-performance 256GB chips will probably find their way to a number of upcoming Samsung devices including high-end smartphones.

First Black Shark Gaming Smartphone Teaser Reveals A Curvy Xorner With No D-pad

We are eagerly awaiting to hear more about the Black Shark gaming smartphone. This is a Xiaomi-backed company that is planning to release a gaming-oriented smartphone to compete with the first-generation Razer phone.

The phone has already been spotted in a couple of benchmarks and an invitation has been sent out for an April 13 event in Beijing, China. The latest piece of news surrounding the Black Shark is a teaser that pulls back the covers on the corner of the phone, revealing a smartphone body with a large-curved corner, contrasting the Razer phone’s blocky appearance.

First Black Shark Gaming Smartphone Teaser Reveals A Curvy Xorner With No D-pad

There is a power key on the side being teased, but no volume rocker, so we are expecting the volume rocker to be on the opposite side of the device. By contrast, we’ve seen many Chinese phone makers put the power key and volume buttons on the same side. The teaser translates to “Students are competitive” and features a fencer with a sabre splitting their face and the phone down the middle, which sets the tone well for a gaming smartphone.

The phone is rumored to have a Snapdragon 845 and may come with between 6GB and 8GB of RAM and we’re hoping to see 256GB of internal storage to pack away all those games. We are also expecting a display supporting 120Hz refresh rates and HDR support. Otherwise, we don’t know too much more about the device’s hardware itself. We can’t wait to hear more about this once April 13 rolls around.

Google Confirms It’s blocking Google Apps On “Uncertified” Android devices

google blocking uncertified android devices

Last week, some users of Android phones reported that they were shown a message, blocking users out of using Google Apps. This was happening particularly to those who were using smartphones with unlocked bootloaders or running a custom ROM.

Today, Google has confirmed to Android Police the statement in which it acknowledged this practice.

Certified Android devices offer users consistent experiences when using apps from Google and the Play Store [… as well as Google Play Protect]. We acknowledge that some manufacturers are building and selling devices that have not been certified by Google.

This means that from now on, devices that are not certified with Google will be explicitly exempted from signing into Google Apps. In order to save them the hassle, some sketchy smartphone manufacturers either don’t adhere to Google’s hardware guidelines or simply would rather not go through the trouble of certifying devices for whatever reasons.

Cost isn’t one of these reasons, as getting hardware certified doesn’t cost manufacturers anything. Some of these manufactures might be more concerned about pumping out low-quality devices and would rather skip out on getting them certified.

google blocking uncertified android devices

This would include smartphones that are running custom ROMs, since they aren’t officially sanctioned by Google. Using a device with an unlocked bootloader might trip Google as well. In order to continue using a device with Google services that is running unofficial software, you will have to acknowledge that your device isn’t certified and Google will let you exempt your device by submitting a request with an IMEI number or the Google Services Framework ID from your phone.

google blocking uncertified android devices

Google will only allow you to use 100 exemptions per Google account, so it’s possible that factory resetting a custom or unofficial ROM will count against your 100 allowed exemptions.

The reason behind Google cracking down on unofficial devices or software is simple. Google wants devices that carry the Android name to consistently adhere to Google’s guidelines. It would also help consumers identify counterfeit smartphones or those that may pose a security threat.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Gets MIUI 9.5 Update

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Gets MIUI 9.5 Update

Yesterday the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 started getting the Global MIUI 9.5. Today another member of the Redmi Note family got lucky – the Redmi Note 3 is getting the very same package. The new version is bringing mostly security updates and bug fixes, along with some minor UI updates.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Gets MIUI 9.5 Update

The MIUI version is V9.5.1.0.MHOMIEK and is around 425 MB in size. The update has a security patch dating January 1, 2018, but the whole thing is running on the same Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is one of 30 devices that will get MIUI 9.5 over the next month.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s Rumor Roundup

1. You can charge it wirelessly

xiaomi mi mix 2s charging

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s will also be the first Xiaomi smartphone to support wireless charging – yay!

And finally, here’s what we don’t know. First off it’s the price. If the current Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 price is to be taken into consideration, we are looking at pricing between €500 and €700 depending on the built-in storage and the RAM. It’s entirely possible that the Mi Mix 2s will cost even more than its predecessor too, as has been the case with most flagships over the past year and a half.

xiaomi mi mix 2s charging

Availability dates and potential water resistance rating are two more bits from the puzzle that we are missing. Not long left now – tune in at 6AM GMT tomorrow so we can find the answers together.

2. Face unlock

xiaomi mi mix 2s face unlock

That same selfie camera will be able to unlock the phone through Facial Recognition. And that recognition will be able to work even if you have a beard or a hat on.

One of the bigger changes to the Mi Mix 2s is the camera on the back. It will be a dual camera with a 12MP normal and 12MP telephoto sensor, similar to that of the Xiaomi Mi 6.

3. Upgraded chipset – Snapdragon 845

xiaomi mi mix 2s chipset

The most logical upgrade is the chipset. Yes, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S will have a Snapdragon 845 inside and not the rumored Xiaomi-developed Surge chipset.

4. No awkward side notch on the top

xiaomi mi mix 2s no awkward side

We were initially expecting an unorthodox corner notch for the selfie camera, but that turned out a hoax.

This means the selfie camera of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s will stay in the bottom bezel as with its predecessor.

xiaomi mi mix 2s rumor

Xiaomi will release the upgrade to its most sought-after flagship tomorrow – March 27.

But what exactly does an S bring to the Mi Mix 2 formula? For starters, let’s look at what aspects will likely remain unchanged from the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S

The screen will remain an 18:9 6-inch IPS LCD of 1080x2160px unit. We would prefer AMOLED, sure, but the Mix 2’s LCD is likely here to stay.

The build materials will stay the same – we’ll most likely see the same overall design – aluminum frame and ceramic back. Whether the Mix 2s will get an all ceramic version like the Mix 2 is yet to be confirmed.

The fingerprint will remain on the back of the phone, dead center.

Having covered those, let’s see what will change with the Mi Mix 2S.

Huawei Honor 7A Leaks

Huawei Honor 7A Leaks

The Honor 7 family is growing another letter as China Telecom briefly let an Honor 7A peek out from under the covers. The phone should be made official this Friday at a price of CNY 1,500 ($240/€190).

It has all the trappings of a modern smartphone, including an 18:9 screen and a dual camera. The screen is reasonably big at 5.7”, but not too sharp – 720 x 1,440. The processing power is modest too, with a Snapdragon 430 chipset (not even a 450). The memory situation is pretty good at 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage.

Huawei Honor 7A Leaks

The dual camera has a 13MP main shooter and a 2MP helper. With that resolution, chances are this will be used for bokeh effects.

The Huawei Honor 7A will launch with Android 8.0 Oreo. It is powered by a 3,000mAh battery and measures 152.4 x 73 x 7.8mm and weighs 150g.
